Why We Are Radical
Radical is defined as:
- of or going to the root or origin; fundamental: a radical difference.
- thoroughgoing or extreme, especially as regards change from accepted or traditional forms: a radical change in the policy of a company.
- favoring drastic political, economic, or social reforms: radical ideas; radical and anarchistic ideologues.
- forming a basis or foundation.
- existing inherently in a thing or person: radical defects of character.
We believe that self-love is the root or origin of our relationship to ourselves — that we come to this planet as LOVE.
We believe that we need an extreme form of self-love to counter the constant barrage of shame, discrimination, and body terrorism that are enacted against us every single day.
We believe that our society needs a drastic political, economic, and social reformation in the way in which we deal with bodies and body difference.
We believe that radical self-love is the foundation for radical human love.
We believe that radical self-love is indeed our inherent natural state, but that the systems around us have distanced us from that knowing.
We believe that our work in this movement is to move the world closer to a self-love that is fundamental, a powerful force for social, political, and economic change, and a way of living clearly inherent in all that we think, say, and do. We are radical on purpose!”
Beautiful Bodies of Birmingham exists to represent the marginalized and unify those who identify with us. This is a grassroots movement of love. We believe that self-love and body-positivity is the true way to view ourselves and others.
All bodies are good bodies. There is no right or wrong way to have one. There is no right or wrong way to exist. We are here to celebrate differences and uniqueness, while providing safe spaces in doing so.
Starting in 2017, Beautiful Bodies of Birmingham has extended our focus to not only include adults, but also our youth. Teenagers face constant social pressures that dramatically influence their self-worth. BBofBhamTeens gives young people a place to not only express themselves, but learn and grow into healthy adults.
We plan on spreading our message with Community Outreach and Educational Workshops. We are focused on building lasting ties within the Birmingham community, our workshops will advance proper representation to help promote a positive body image and high self-esteem. Our attendees will learn how to retrain their brains to view themselves in a positive light. They will learn how to combat a society that is invested in our self-hatred and learn what it means to practice a body-positive lifestyle.
There will be more plus-size clothing swaps, hosting queer safe space dance parties, providing free body-positive yoga that is accessible for everyone, and host meet ups once a month to strengthen our tribe!
We will host special events throughout the year. From art galleries featuring body-positive artists with interactive art installations, to live shows from local musicians, our events will explore the true meaning of self-love while connecting those with likeminded people. BBofBham will also be providing content on our site that is filled with resources for folks to get help with body dysmorphic disorders, eating disorders, and support for low self-esteem.
